The natural areas of Hythe Park are a haven for wildlife. On 15th of March this blossom tree was a buzz with honey bees as well as our native solitary and bumble bees and already being visited by four different species of butterfly: the beautiful Comma butterflies, Small Tortoiseshells, a Red Admiral and the traditional first flyer of the year the yellow coloured Brimstone.

Areas of the park are managed to encourage wildlife.  The council are now cutting some of the grass as a meadow to allow the gorgeous reddish yellow Bird's Foot Trefoil, amongst others, to flower, great for the nectar and pollen loving bees, moths, beetles and butterflies as well as providing long grasses for the tuneful grasshoppers. All this plus the play areas for all ages make this park a great place to visit.

It will be even more interesting on Saturday May 21st when The Friends of Hythe Park are organising a family fun day.  Surrey Wildlife Trust and The Surrey Reptiles and Amphibians Group will be on site to help give hands on experience with pond dipping, meet and learn about slow worms; plus a nature trail and orienteering route.  All ages are invited, bring your parents, bring a picnic. Teddy bears, accompanied by any aged human, are invited to wear fancy dress for a competition with prizes donated by local businesses. Themes are:
1. Explorers and Scientists
2. Myths and Fairy tales
3. TV and films.

There will also be a display of teddy bears through the ages.

The Teddy Bears Picnic, Family Fun Day takes place at 12-4pm on Saturday 21st May at the Hythe Park, TW20 8AW. Parking and main entrance is off Rowan Avenue, off Wendover Road or Pooley Green Road. (no bookings needed, children under 8 must be accompanied by someone over 13).
